OIL BOILER REPAIR

Oil boilers use petroleum oil as fuel. The oil flow from a reservoir or tank where it is stored, to the central heating area. Here it is ignited and burns to produce the flame that acts as source of the heat used to heat water in pipes passing in the heating area.

The hot water or steam is then circulated to perform the required tasks after which it returns to the central heating for heat before the process continues.

WHEN TO REPAIR YOUR OIL FIRED BOILER.

If you have an oil boiler installed, the following signs should be noted since they indicate it may need servicing/repair.

  • Accumulation of yellow or brown staining around or on the boiler; which may result from oil leaks.
  • Emission of black smoke. This shows that the oil is not burning completely resulting to low heat production and wastage of fuel (oil). In the contrary the smoke should be greyish white.
  • Presence of increased condensation inside windows.
  • Build-up of soot. It prevents the boiler from burning oil efficiently leading to wastage.
  • A frequently blows out pilot light that.
  • When the flam being produced is yellow (sooty) rather than blue flame.
  • WHAT NEXT IF MY OIL BOILER IS FAULTY.

When the above signs are noted on an oil boiler one can try performing the following before calling a service technician.

  • The Thermostat should be checked to ensure it is set higher than the room temperature. This is necessary since if it is set lower the boiler’s heating will be suppressed once the set temperatures are attained.
  • The power circuit feeding the boiler from the electrical power panel should be checked to ensure that it has not tripped from while protecting the circuit from excessive current especially due to a short circuiting.
  • The main power switch should be checked to ensure that it is in the on position.
  • Oil storage tank should be inspected to make sure it has fuel. This can be done using a long wooden stick inserted into the tank to check for fuel level in case one doesn’t have a fuel level gage.
  • Ignition firing assembly can also be disassembled in order to check for any faults in the ignition system.
  • WHEN THING ARE OUT OF MY CAPABILITIES.

If after carrying out all of the above your oil boiler remains defective call a service person to inspect and repair the boiler.

Then you should caution the service person to perform the following.

  • To clean the burner or injectors.
  • To clean the pilot or injector.
  • To clean, lubricate and adjust controls.
  • To check all disturbed connections.
  • To Re-check the flame supervision device operation.
  • To clean the flue-ways, the draught diverter and heat exchanger.
  • To Clean and adjust the ignition components.
  • To check all boiler seals and joints.
  • To clean flame supervision components.
  • To check signs of damage to the wiring.
  • To Re-set the burner operating pressure to that on the data label/plate.
  • To Test open-flued boilers for spillage.
